Official Response to Probe of COVID-19 Funds

Thursday, November 23, 2023

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) is the national public health institute with the mandate to lead the preparedness, detection and response to infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.

Like every other country around the world, Nigeria’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was a multisectoral and an inter-governmental effort that involved ministries, agencies and departments in and outside of the health sector.

As we all know, the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 (PTF-COVID-19) was established by President Muhammadu Buhari on March 9, 2020, to coordinate and oversee Nigeria’s multi-sectoral inter-governmental efforts to contain the spread and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 in the country. As a member of the task force, the NCDC led the technical areas of the response including epidemiology and surveillance, laboratory, infection prevention, and control (IPC), and research.

NCDC expressly and categorically denies receiving the sum of N183.9 billion Covid -19 intervention funds. The funding of the country's response to the pandemic was managed by the Presidential Steering Committee for COVID-19 (formerly the Presidential Task Force), through the Resource and Coordination Technical Working Group. A comprehensive report highlighting the breakdown of all funds received by the agency from the committee has been submitted to the Presidential Steering COVID-19 Committee which is the subject of the record.

The NCDC remains committed to protecting the health of Nigerians and ensuring trust through transparency by consistently fostering open communication channels, providing accurate and timely information on issues of public health importance.
